9/15/2023 0 Comments Dead space marker origin![]() The outbreak in the original game happened when the Marker was moved from it's pedestal, and when it was restored the Necromorphs went back into hibernation. It also had a 'dead space' around it, that Necromorphs couldn't enter. The Marker couldn't/didn't reanimate corpses by itself. In the first game, infection was spread solely by Infectors. NB: the nature and 'purpose' of the Marker and Necromorphs has changed slightly, with each iteration of the game. The sacrificial/suicidal Necros only make up a small part of the infection vector their sacrifices are more than made up for when they kill hostile uninfected who might otherwise hamper an infection. Infectors (the bat-like things) speed up the process by infecting dead organisms that are too far from a Marker to reanimate on their own. When all, or the majority, of a planet's organisms have been infected, the Necromorphs congregate at Marker sites before they're blasted into the atmosphere to create a new Brother Moon. These Necromorphs then go on to kill uninfected organisms, exponentially increasing the number of individuals exposed to the Marker signal and reanimated as Necromorphs. This sets the stage for the second purpose: dead organisms, in the presence of a Marker (what distance that is varies in sources) reanimate as Necromorphs. For all individuals, even Makers, the Marker signal also generates hallucinations (usually of dead loved ones), paranoia, and psychosis. For everyone else, the constant 'background noise' of the Marker signal produces extremely violent homicidal and suicidal tendencies. The blueprint broadcast can only be correctly received and 'translated' by certain individuals. Sentient races are expected to realize this, and with the broadcasted plans, build more, ostensibly for an energy revolution. It's never explained in-universe, but the Markers are a tremendous source of power. The Markers serve a twofold process: first, they telepathically broadcast blueprints for how to create more. Millennia ago they seeded the galaxy with the Markers. The beginning, and end, of the Necromorph cycle are the Brethren Moons sentient, malevolent, planetoids composed entirely of dead flesh. ![]()
